Social website cookies
So you can easily “Like” or share our content on the likes of Facebook and Twitter we have included sharing buttons on our site. Cookies are set by:
- Google Plus
- ShareThis (who provide us with lots of sharing buttons all in one neat package)
- AddThis – (who also provide us with lots of sharing buttons all in one neat package – we like to try out different ones)
The privacy implications on this will vary from social network to social network and will be dependent on the privacy settings you have chosen on these networks.
Social website cookies
We regularly test new designs or site features on our site. We do this by showing slightly different versions of our website to different people and anonymously monitoring how our site visitors respond to these different versions. Ultimately this helps us to offer you a better website. We use Optimizely software to do this (privacy policy) (cookie opt-out)
Anonymous visitor statistics cookies
We use cookies to compile visitor statistics such as how many people have visited our website, what type of technology they are using (e.g. Mac or Windows which helps to identify when our site isn’t working as it should for particular technologies), how long they spend on the site, what page they look at etc. This helps us to continuously improve our website. These so called “analytics” programs also tell us if , on an anonymous basis, how people reached this site (e.g. from a search engine) and whether they have been here before helping us to put more money into developing our services for you instead of marketing spend. We use quite a number (as internet marketers we like to test these tools frequently) including:
- Google Analytics – If you are anti-Google you can opt-out of being tracked by Google Analytics (we’d prefer you didn’t though as this data is seriously helpful to us in improving our website)
- Tynt. Bad name and we aren’t totally sure about the product! We will get back to you on this one in due course.
Pretty-much-anonymous tracking software
A very nifty tool called Click Tale sometimes takes little videos as you view this site. Again it is completely anonymous with one exception: if you submit an enquiry to us then, believe it or not, we can actually play back your user session. Don’t worry though we don’t have a camera looking at you – it just records keyboard strokes and mouse movements which can be really helpful in making our forms easier to understand. Further, if you don’t fill out a form at any point we will never know who you or nor will Click Tale (who will never know who you are). Click Tale are hot on data privacy and protection, so much so we were sufficiently impressed to blog about it. You should also check out their privacy policy. It’s a tool we love and we would be delighted to show you it in action. Of course if this is all too much for you, you can disable ClickTale. We also use technology to determine how people who phone us arrived on our website (e.g. from a search engine or by clicking on an advert). This is to help us to identify how people heard about us. Please be aware that if you call us, using a phone number on the website we can potentially tell how you arrived on our website. Again this ultimately helps us keep down costs for you. We use a product called AdInsight.
Advertising cookies
Cookies are widely used in online advertising. Neither us, advertisers or our advertising partners can gain personally identifiable information from these cookies. You can opt-out of almost all advertising cookies here although we would prefer that you didn’t as ultimately adverts help keep much of the internet free. It is also worth noting that opting out of advertising cookies will not mean you won’t see adverts, just simply that they won’t be tailored to you any longer.
Remarketing cookies
You may notice that sometimes after visiting a site you see increased numbers of adverts from the site you visited. This is because advertisers, including ourselves pay for these adverts. The technology to do this is made possible by cookies and as such we may place a so called “remarketing cookie” during your visit. We use these adverts to offer special offers etc to encourage you to come back to our site. Don’t worry we are unable to proactively reach out to you as the whole process is entirely anonymised. You can opt-out of these advertising cookies at any time as explained above.
Turning cookies off
You can usually switch cookies off by adjusting your browser settings to stop it from accepting cookies (Learn how here). Doing so, however, will likely limit the functionality of our’s and a large proportion of the world’s websites as cookies are a standard part of most modern websites It may be that your concerns around cookies relate to so called “spyware”. Rather than switching off cookies in your browser you may find that anti-spyware software achieves the same objective by automatically deleting cookies considered to be invasive.
